Skyping with Florida

Today we Skyped with Mrs. Howell-Martin’s third grade class. They go to school in Daytona Beach, Florida. Here are some of the interesting things we found out:

1. They have 18 students in their class and we have 21 students in our class.
2. They have more people in their school than we have in our whole town (over 800).
3. They have about 20,000 people in their town and we have 800.
4. It was 32ºC (90ºF) in Florida and only 12ºC (54ºF) here in Sointula. It was hot and sunny there today and we needed our jackets and umbrellas because t was cool and very rainy.
5. We both like to read a lot of the same books.
6. We both studied the solar system this year and we thought it was very cool that they got to study ancient Egypt.
7. Their state bird is the Mockingbird and our provincial bird is the Stellar’s Jay

8. They have alligators, snakes and Manta Rays where they live. We don’t have any of those animals in Sointula. We found out that we both have killer whales in our oceans though.

9. They wanted to know what kinds of shoes we wear. We had never been asked that before. We showed them some of our shoes.

It was a lot of fun talking with Mrs. Howell-Martin’s class. They only have 4 more days of school left. We hope they have a great summer!

Skype with the Techie Kids

Today we got to Skype with the Techie Kids and their teacher Mrs. Moore! The Techie Kids have a blog just like we do. We like to visit their blog and see all the great things they are doing at school. We also like to write comments to each other.

Here are some of the things we found out today:
-They have 328 students in their school and we only have 38
-They have 11,000 people in their town and we only have 800
-They like reading Nancy Drew, Junie B. Jones, Baby Sitter’s Club, and Calvin and Hobbes. We think Calvin and Hobbes is funny!
-It was 28°C there today and 11°C here
-We both like a lot of the same outdoor sports
-They have a lot of restaurants to choose from
-They live near Lake St. Clair and like water sports. Lake St. Clair is way bigger than Big Lake. It is 40km across! Big Lake isn’t even 1km across.
-We sang each other our national anthems

We think that both anthems are great!

We hope that we can Skype with the Techie Kids again!

We Love Skype!

Today we Skyped with Ms. Reid’s Grade 3 class from Kernersville, North Carolina. We found their town on Google Earth and were amazed by how big it was compared to our little town. Here is a picture

Caleb's Creek Elementary

We got to find out a little about each other and are looking forward to another call soon! Here are some of the cool things we learned from them:

*They have an alligator as their school animal
* They have 5 traffic lights in their town
*800 people go to their school
*Silly Bandz are the hottest thing there right now (We looked them up on the internet)
*They have longer school days and we have a longer lunch
*They don’t have any class animals

Our First Skype Call!

Today we talked with Mrs. Soltau-Heller’s grade 1/2 class in Port Hardy. We compared information about our classes and schools. We also took turns asking and answering questions about favourite foods and animals. They even taught us how to say good bye in Kwakwala, Gila kasla! We are looking forward to our next Skype call and hope we can talk to our friends in Australia.
