Crafting with our Seniors

Yesterday we had a very special afternoon. We went on the school bus down to the Seniors’ building to meet up with a wonderful group of our community seniors. Throughout the year we are going to be getting together to do all sorts of activities with them. This was our first visit and we all enjoyed making Valentine decorations for their upcoming potluck, as well as some things to take home.  Before we left, Mrs. Fuller had a wonderful surprise for us. She had made beautiful Valentine sugar cookies for each of us and enough to take back to the intermediate students as well.  They were delicious! We are looking forward to another visit soon.

Hand Washing

We had a special guest visit our class today.  Tyler, who is our community paramedic, came to teach us all about hand washing.

Tyler taught us all about germs and how we can stay healthy.  He demonstrated what happens when we sneeze using glitter and a spray bottle.  Germs sure can travel a long distance!  He also showed us the proper technique to use when we was our hands.

Next we put some special “germ” cream on our hands and then went to try out our hand washing skills.  After we washed, Tyler used a special flashlight to show us the spots we missed.

We would like to thank Tyler for visiting our class. Here are some of the things we learned:

  • Sneeze in your sleeve or else it will spread. (Rylann)
  • When you cough, cover your mouth. (Cayden)
  • If you touch something that is dirty, after doing it wash your hands. (Teddy)
  • Germs can spread. (Cozy)
  • Eat very good vegetables and fruit. (Kip)
  • If you are eating something and it is dirty it will spread germs. (Sinead)
  • You rub the soap all over your hands, then you wash it off, and then you get a paper towel. (Acacia)
  • There are lots of places that germs can get to, that you miss when you are washing your hands. (Joselyn)
  • Wash your hands with soap and water. (Lina)
  • Sing the Happy Birthday song twice or once if you sing it slow. (Harmony)
  • Don’t touch somebody else’s food. (James)
  • Germs can spread easily if you don’t wash your hands properly. (Ayla)
  • If you are sick and you want to get better you can eat chicken noodle soup. (Ryder)
  • Germs can spread when you sneeze or cough. (Clara)

Mrs. Watson asked us to go home this weekend and teach someone in our house the hand washing technique we learned today.

Fire Prevention Week Visitors

The K/1/2/3s would like to thank volunteer firefighters Glen and Jason and paramedic Tyler (who is also a volunteer firefighter) for coming to visit the school yesterday.  We learned about fire safety and got to take a tour of the firetruck and the ambulance as part of Fire Prevention Week.  We hope that families will check their smoke alarms and talk about their Home Fire Escape plans.  The students all brought home pamphlets that can be used to make a Fire Escape plan.

Eli-I learned to check your smoke alarm every month.  I thought it was every 2 months.

James-I really liked the loud siren.

Mackenzie-I learned that you should know your phone number, address, and then 911.

Loden-I learned that they have spotlights.

Caleb-I learned theta they use axes when they are stuck

Alexandra-I like the sirens.

Jacob-I learned about the axe.

Cherish-I learned that the ambulance has more than one siren.

Sierra-The ambulance has lots of stuff inside of it.  I knew that because I have ridden in it before.

Harmony-I learned because I was listening.

Fire Safety

Today, we had a special visit from the Sointula Volunteer Fire Department. Glen, Jason and Tyler talked to us about fire safety. We learned all about the importance of having a fire safety plan at home. The students will be bringing home a booklet you can use for making your plan if you don’t already have one. We also talked about smoke alarms (don’t forget to check them every month) and fire extinguishers.

The K/1/2/3s would like to share some fire safety tips with you:
Sierra-If you are on fire, Stop, Drop, and Roll and cover your eyes and mouth.
Storm-If you call, “Help, help!” they will come.
Hilary-Don’t hide or the firemen won’t know where you are. You should yell.
Caleb-Always test the smoke alarm.
Kaleigh-Don’t go near where the fire is.
Cherish-If there is a fire and there is no way to get out, feel the door and if it is hot just wait for the firemen.
Mackenzie-Remember to put wet stuff under the door, move away and cover you mouth and breathe through it.
Owain-Always have a fire safety plan.
Owen-Duck so the smoke doesn’t get near you.
Alexandra-Never leave your meeting spot.
Ava-Always, when there is a fire, be very careful because there might be fire in the house.
Mya-Check smoke alarms at least once a month.
Eli-Sometimes if the door is hot or blocked go out the window.
Star-Be careful in the kitchen.
Kaydan-Never ever pull the fire alarm at school unless there is a fire.

Hour of Code

Today the K-3 students participated in an Hour of Code.

What is an Hour of Code? Watch the YouTube video below to learn more.

What is Computer Science?

Computer science develops students’ computational and critical thinking skills and shows them how to create, not simply use, new technologies. This fundamental knowledge is needed to prepare students for the 21st century, regardless of their ultimate field of study or occupation. (https://www.dropbox.com/s/o1mafeosi0xuwb0/What_is_CS_and_Careers.pdf )

Why is it important for students to learn about computer programming?

  • Computer Science is a top paying college degree
  • By 2020 there will be 1,000,000 more computer science jobs than there are students
  • Without computer science not much works
  • There will always be jobs for coders
  • Solving problems is never boring
  • Making.  Really.  Cool.  Things!

The K/1/2/3 students were able to write their own computer programs using drag and drop programming.    They learned about repeat loops, conditionals, and basic algorithms.  The students were also able to see the computer code that was “under the hood” of the drag and drop commands they chose.  You can try the tutorial they took part in here:  http://learn.code.org/hoc/1

The students had a great time and many of them want to learn more. The tutorials at Hour of Code are available for the students to work through whenever they would like. Here is a link to another tutorial that uses the same drag and drop program they used at school today.

The program is called Scratch and in this tutorial the students can learn to make an animated holiday card.

We hope you will give an Hour of Code a try to!

Healthy Eating

Today we had a visit from a dietitian. Her name was Bronwen. She talked to us about the different food groups and why it is important to eat fruits and vegetables every day.

We learned that kids our age should try to eat at least 5 fruits and vegetables a day and that it is important to try eat different colours. She also taught us about the nutrients that are in different fruits and vegetables and what they do for our bodies. She even gave us each copies of Canada’s Food Guide to take home.

Koa-I learned that fruit is good for you.
Kezra-I learned that some fruits have Vitamin A and Vitamin D in them.
Jorja-I learned I should have three types of colours every day, green, orange, and red.
Brooklynn-I learned that I normally have more than 5 fruits and vegetables every day.
Jacob-I learned that Vitamin C is in oranges.
Sharon-I learned that you are supposed to have 5 fruits and vegetables every day.
Linden-We learned about fruit and vegetables.
Merissa-I learned that we have to have 5 vegetables and fruit a day.1
Solomon-We learned that you have to have 5 vegetables and fruits a day.

What are your favourite fruits and vegetables?

Healthy Eating

In Health and Careers we have been learning about healthy eating and making good food choices. We have learned about the four food groups and the number of servings that are recommended from each food group each day. We have also talked about serving sizes.

Today we tried a game that the grade 3s enjoyed playing last year called, MyPyramid Blast Off. In Canada, our food guide looks a little different, but MyPyramid Blast off is still a great way to practice choosing healthy foods! Click the image below try the game.

Were you able to make it to Planet Power?

Can you give us an example of a healthy meal you enjoy?
