Skyping with Florida

Today we Skyped with Mrs. Howell-Martin’s third grade class. They go to school in Daytona Beach, Florida. Here are some of the interesting things we found out:

1. They have 18 students in their class and we have 21 students in our class.
2. They have more people in their school than we have in our whole town (over 800).
3. They have about 20,000 people in their town and we have 800.
4. It was 32ºC (90ºF) in Florida and only 12ºC (54ºF) here in Sointula. It was hot and sunny there today and we needed our jackets and umbrellas because t was cool and very rainy.
5. We both like to read a lot of the same books.
6. We both studied the solar system this year and we thought it was very cool that they got to study ancient Egypt.
7. Their state bird is the Mockingbird and our provincial bird is the Stellar’s Jay

8. They have alligators, snakes and Manta Rays where they live. We don’t have any of those animals in Sointula. We found out that we both have killer whales in our oceans though.

9. They wanted to know what kinds of shoes we wear. We had never been asked that before. We showed them some of our shoes.

It was a lot of fun talking with Mrs. Howell-Martin’s class. They only have 4 more days of school left. We hope they have a great summer!

  1. Good Day Mrs. W and the 1/2/3’s,

Thank you for commenting on our blog. I noticed that you indicated you love to Skype. As this is something that is not allowed in our district due to network constraints, I have asked for special permission. Would it be possible to set up a time for next week if I can get approval? Say, next Friday, June 11 at 1:15? Please let me know! You can email too at scookedu@sbcglobal.net

  2. Hi Mrs Watson and the 1/2/3s,

Thanks for your great message! We do love to get comments from you! 🙂

Your Reading Sleepover sounds like SO much fun! We think the treasure hunt, library scavenger hunt and the t-shirt/pillowcase decorating sound like the best activities! We also think sleeping in tents at school will be lots of fun! I hope you all get a BIT of sleep that night. 😉

Yes, Santa does visit all of the children in Australia and he DOES wear his full red costume with boots and mittens. He must get very hot! We have never ever seen snow at Christmas but we all think it would be awesome to have a white Christmas. Does it usually snow for you at Christmas time?

As our school is so big and we have 5 grade 2 classes, all of the students get shuffled around into new grades each year. We do make sure that everyone has a few friends in each new grade though.

Do you have any end of year activities planned? Do you have class parties at the end of the year at your school?

    Talk to you soon!

From Miss Jordan and 2KJ 🙂

  3. Good afternoon Mrs. W and the 1/2/3’s! My kids are very excited about getting the opportunity to Skype with you. Would it be possible to get back to me today to see if this Friday is available? You can post a message on our blog or send me an email. My students have been reading all the interesting things your class learned by Skyping with other classes. As they never even knew about your island, they are most eager to learn more. Also, your provincial bird is absolutely beautiful! (I am a bird lover!!)
    Sincerely,
    Mrs. Yammine
