Daily 5

We have only been doing the Daily 5 for 6 days now and the students have already built their Read to Self stamina up to 18 minutes and are on day 2 of Work on Writing.

We hope you will take a peek at us practicing our independence and notice how we work quietly, stay in one spot, and read or write the whole time.

We love Daily 5!

  1. Hello from Kent, Washington. I love Daily 5….and you boys and girls blew me away! What determined workers you are! I love that you are reading books you are interested in and writing about things you care about! Aren’t you proud of yourselves? Wow…..that’s all I can say…..wow (Do you know Lily’s Purple Plastic Purse?). Keep building your stamina. You are going to do amazing things this year!

    • Dear Mrs. Sabo,
Thank you for your extraordinary comment! We are really proud of ourselves. We are looking forward to when we can add Read to Someone and using the computers in our rounds. The grade threes did Daily 5 last year and are great role models.

Mrs. Watson says that she will get Lily’s Purple Plastic Purse from the library so that we can read it. We have read other books by same author. Is that your favourite book?

      Your friends,
      Mrs. W and the 2/3s

  2. Dear Mrs Watson’s Class
I am very impressed with your independence and the way you are reading and writing. It looks like you are building up great stamina in both. Well done, in such a short time you are showing you are keen to be great readers and writers. I hope you will show us how great you all are as you build up your skills.

    • Dear Miss T,
Thank you so much for visiting our blog and leaving us a comment! We are having fun reading and writing. We also really like sharing the stories we have written and talking about what we are reading. Mrs. Watson told us that your students are doing the Daily 5 too. Do your students have a favourite round?

  3. Congratulations Grade 2/3! It was so impressive seeing how focussed you stayed during your Read 2 Self session. To reach 18 minutes after just 6 days back at school is awesome. You have some great looking spots to choose for your reading. I enjoyed hearing about the different things you are writing about as well. It would be wonderful to hear some of your finished stories. Keep up your fantastic learning. I can see why Mrs Watson is so proud of you all.

    • Dear Mrs. Nelson,
Thank you for visiting our blog and for leaving us a comment. Hopefully we will be able to start working on our own blogs soon so everyone will be able to read our writing in our posts. What grade do you teach? Do your students do Daily 5?

      From,
      Mrs. W and the 2/3s

  4. Hi Mrs Watson and class,
I’m very impressed that you can already read independently for 18 minutes. Your classroom looks great. It looks very spacious and there seems to be lots of cosy spots to sit and read. Our classroom is a bit small, but we try to keep it tidy.
My class (3DD) is planning to add some new books to our classroom library. We’d love you to visit our blog and tell us what you love to read.
We already have many great books in our class library including the lovely books sent to us by our quad blogging buddies last year. Thank you again for your book.
It’s funny how you are just beginning a new school year and we won’t finish until just before Christmas!
Keep up the great work. Reading and writing are my favourite things to do. (Especially reading!)

    From Mrs de Vries.

    • Dear Mrs. de Vries,
It is so good to be back at school! We thought it is funny too that we are just starting our year and that you are getting close to the end of yours.

We read one of the Tashi books you sent last week and we are halfway through the second one now. We love Tashi too! We will try to think of some good book suggestions and visit your blog later in the week.

We love reading and writing too! Do you have a favourite book?

      From,
      Mrs. W and the 2/3s

  5. Dear Mrs. Watson’s 2/3 Class,

We noticed that you were all super quiet, and we thought that you could probably hear a pin drop! We are also learning about Read to Self and we are on day 9. We are at 20 minutes of stamina. During Read to Self it is fun to get sucked into the book. We call it getting “in the zone.”

We noticed that you had your coats in the room, does that mean you don’t have lockers? We keep our coats in our lockers. You are lucky to have a couch and comfy chairs in your room! We wish we had those also.

Mr. Salsich told us that you get to play in a forest during recess. That must be awesome!

    From your friends,
    Mr. Salsich’s class

  6. Dear Mr. Salsich’s Class,
Thank you for leaving us a comment. We hope you are having a great start to your school year!

We think it is cool that you are doing Daily 5 too. We made it to 20 minutes yesterday. We were so excited! We have gotten “into the zone” before too, but we hadn’t called it that. We think that’s what we’ll call it too. 🙂

Only the intermediate students in our school have lockers. We do keep our coats and shoes in the classroom. It must be nice to have lockers!

We love our forest. Do you have a forest or anything like that to play in? In the forest we have a little area where people like to play and hide. We also had a bit of a wasp problem in the forest at the end of last school year. They had nests in the ground.

    Your friends,
    Mrs. W and the 2/3s

  7. To Mrs. Watson’s class,

I really enjoyed my visit to your school and class today. I will visit your blog regularly. Hope everyone has a great weekend.

    • Dear Mr. Benwell,
Thank you for coming to visit our school and classroom. We were excited to see a comment from you! We hope that you will come back to visit us again soon and that you will be able to stop by our blog and see what we are learning.

      Mrs. W and the 2/3s

  8. Hi Guys,
Well I don’t know where to begin! You are all so AWESOME at doing Read to Self. I would never have known that you were beginners if Mrs Watson had not told me. I have downloaded the video (because my school has such a slow internet connection) to show my students when I get back to work. I’m on holiday at the moment. I think they will be so impressed and I also think it will help them to do their own Read to Self with lots of stamina!
I teach Year 1 students in Far North Queensland in Australia and we have been doing the Daily Five since the end of January, which is when children in Australia go back to school after the long summer break. In Far North Queensland we never wear coats, it is warm all year round.
Next year I am hoping to have a class blog. Also I think I will be teaching the same kids, but they will be in Year 2.
Oh, I also wanted to say how lucky you are to have such a beautiful classroom, so big and so cheerful. Mrs Watson looks like she worked very hard to make it so nice for you:)
    Bye for now, Ms Camden

    • Dear Ms. Camden,
Thank you so much for he wonderful comment. We are really proud of how well we are doing with building our stamina. Today at the end of Read to Self we got to 26 minutes and Mrs. Watson had to stop us because it was time for the next round. We couldn’t believe it!

It is so neat to find out that there are other kids all over the world doing Daily 5 too. Do your students have a favourite round?

It must be nice to not have to wear coats at all. It doesn’t get very cold here, but it does rain quite a bit and it is fairly windy some days. We definitely need to wear coats. Some of the students in the class wanted to know if it has ever snowed there or if the students in your class have ever seen snow?

Mrs. Watson loves that she gets to teach the same students more than one year. We think you will love it too 🙂

      Your friends,
      Mrs. W and the 2/3s

  9. Dear Mrs W and Grade 2/3
We think it’s great that you have built your stamina up to 18 minutes for read to Self.
We think the stories you were writing sounded interesting too.
In Work on Writing we make comments or write in our books or on our wiki page.

Last year we always did reading in groups but this year we do Daily 5 and we make our own choices and we like it!

    bye for now
    Mrs M♔Kenzie and B4

    • Dear Mrs. McKenzie and B4,
It was so great to see a comment from you! The students asked right away about the alien posts they read at the end of last school year.

We are just getting back in the blogging routine. The grade 3’s still have their blogs from last year, but blogging is new to the grade 2’s. Comments like yours are helping us learn to make quality comments ourselves. Soon we will go out visiting the blogs of our global buddies.

We think it is great that you are doing Daily 5 too. Do the students have a favourite round? We are just getting ready to add Listen to Reading and then Word Work soon after.

      Your friends,
      Mrs. W and the 2/3s

  10. Hello Everyone – Greetings from Craigburn Primary School in Adelaide, South Australia.
Well done on reading for so long during your independent reading time. You’ve done really well to read for so long so early in your school term. My class loves the Daily Cafe and LOVE to read. We can read for at least 35 minutes now – but we were quick to get that high. In fact most of the time people don’t want to stop reading. It’s important to read everyday to improve your skills. What else do you like about the Daily 5? We’d love to hear from you.
    Kind regards
Miss Sporn and Year 2 class

    • Dear Miss Sporn and Year 2,
Thanks so much for visiting our blog! We can’t believe how many classes are doing Daily 5 from all over the world. It is sort of like one big global classroom 🙂

We think it is fantastic that you can do 35 minutes of Read to Self, Wow! We have noticed that a lot of students in our class also don’t want to stop reading. Like Mr. Salsich commented, we are definitely getting in the zone.

So far we have introduced Read to Self and Work on Writing. We are also learning the choices we will have during Listen to Reading and Work on Writing and will add them in soon. The last Daily we will introduce is Read to Someone…we can’t wait! Do your students have a favourite round?

      Sincerely,
      Mrs. W and the 2/3s

  11. Hi! We watched your video today and really enjoyed watching another class do Read To Self and Work on Writing. Here are some of the comments:

    ~The room is really quiet
~The students work the whole time and are “in the zone”
    ~I like the rug!
~I wish we had a couch.
~I want to write about Club Penguin
~They look like our class when we do Daily 5!

Great job Mrs. Watson’s class. Keep up the good work!

  12. Dear Mrs Watson’s 2/3 class Is it fun? We do Daily 5 too but we have 5 choices in B4 and these are the 5 choices read to self listen to reading work on words work on writing and read to someone .
    from sp&spadeske N&#9733than

  13. Mrs. W and the 2/3′s,
Thank you for the reply to my comment. In answer to your question, it never snows here in Far North Queensland because we are living in the tropics. The tropics are the area between the Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn, and it is always warm. Some of my kids are from New Zealand and Japan so they have seen snow, but most of them have never seen snow.
I think that my kids favourite Daily 5 is Read to Someone, but next week I will check with them and let you know.
I loved watching you use the Wikki Stix because I have just got some for my class. Do you only use them in Word Work?
    Keep up the wonderful work!
    Ms Camden
