Pancakes and Maple Syrup

Today we made pancakes so that we could sample the delicious maple syrup the Gill-Villeans sent along with G2. It was absolutely delicious! Some students in our class had never tried pure maple syrup before.

We found this video on You Tube showing how maple syrup is made:

Thank you for our special treat, Gill-villeans!

Have you ever tried pure maple syrup before?Β  What do you like to eat it on?

  1. Hello BC friends! Thanks so much for posting this awesome video on Gill’s wiki! We’re really glad that you enjoyed the maple syrup. We loved eating pancakes at school, too! The maple syrup that you tasted was from a sugar bush near where my parent’s live in a town called Port Perry. Over our March Break, I took my niece and nephews there for a tour. We were able to taste the pure sap coming straight from the tree! It tasted like sweet water. We also had a chance to see the syrup being boiled down into sugar and taste that, too! It was very sweet! It sure looks like Gill is having a great time! I’ll bet he doesn’t miss us at all! πŸ™‚

    • Dear Ms.Gill,
The syrup sort of tasted like sweet melted gold to me. Oh, and Gill 2 told me to tell you that you is having a great fantastic awesome time here with us and he has been well kept away from water.

    • Dear Mrs.Gill,

I just love to leave you comments, so I just clicked Leave a Reply. By the way, Your welcome for that post. Gill does miss you, but he told me that he will be fine. He is having lots of fun. When we made pancakes, Gill said that he wanted to eat the tiny, tiny, tiny pancakes. That was FUNNY! He really, really, really, really, likes pancakes…but only if they are small!

  4. Dear 3/2,

I so love maple syrup. It is so good. I did not know that they made maple syrup that way. The sap looks a lot like water. It would be so boring just to wait that long. It is worth the wait though. I never knew that it took 40 gallons of sap to make one gallon of maple syrup.

  6. Dear Mrs. Watson and class,
Pancakes sound good. I wish we could do that but we do a lot of fun stuff to. I can still make them at my house. Was the maple syrup good. My class watched how to make maple syrup. I can’t believe it takes 40 gallons of sap to make one gallon of syrup. I think that is a lot of sap for one tree. My class has different opinions, some of us think it isn’t a lot but some of us do. I think it is a lot but i’m not sure. Were the pancakes good? How long did it take to make them and was it a lot of work? I made pancakes once, well my mom helped me. They turned out really good. My brother wouldn’t though. He was missing out. Every time I make food he doesn’t eat it. I hope you had fun eating pancakes in school. I have never tried that kind of maple syrup.

  7. Dear Mrs.Watson and class,

I wonder how they get the syrup to be so sweet? :p At home we make homemade pancakes just, we love to add chocolate chips in it. I cook them though,
does anyone make homemade pancakes in your class or add chocolate chips? If so write back to me I will answer πŸ˜€ .

    • Dear Ashley,
I don’t know how how it gets so sweet. All I know is that it is yummy! I make homemade pancakes too, but I have never put chocolate chips in! I have only put chocolate chips in my banana bread and no one in my house puts chocolate chips in their pancakes:(

  8. Dear Mrs. Watson’s Class
It’s very interesting that you need 40 gallons of sap to make 1 gallon of syrup. I’d like to know more. Could you write back?
    Sincerely,
    Colin

    • Dear Colin B.,

Thank you for leaving us a comment. I dont know a lot about maple syrup. I could find out facts for you though ;). Here are some of them:

      1. A maple tree lasts at least 30 years and is 12 inches in diameter before it is tapped.

      2. Maple Syrup is boiled even further to produce Maple Cream, Sugar and Candy.

      I dont know much more.

I loved the post. It was amazing! i wish we could have pancakes in school. We are making kites in school. It’s very fun. It’s also very hard if your off 2 centimeters than it won’t fly right.

Got to go recess! And Mr. Avery plays soccer with us ! He ‘s very good!

    Your new friend,

Ariel ( in Mr. Avery’s class)

    • Dear Ariel,
I loved the post too πŸ™‚ Why did you like the post? What I liked was the they have to wait a long time for the sap because it goes drip by drip by drip.
Every year we have a pancake breakfast in the gym. Our principle is Ms.Sweeny. She is not at our school every day of school. She also goes to Sunset school in Port Mc.Neill.

  10. Dear Mrs W and Grade 2/3
I have tasted real maple syrup, and it came from Canada!
A couple of years ago one of our senior students went to Canada for a year on an exchange. She lived there and went to school.
When she came home she brought back little bottles of maple syrup for her friends, and we got to try some.
I tried it on pancakes and it was yummy.
I have never thought of putting chocolate chips into the pancakes though.

    from Mrs McKenzie

    • Dear Mrs. McKenzie,

That is an interesting story! πŸ™‚ :O :I

I never ever ever had chocolate chips in pancakes before either!!!

Have you ever had snails before? I have.

Sincerly Silkence (in Mrs. W’s 2/3 class.)

  11. Dear Ms.Gill,
The maple syrup tasted awesome. We love it. How long does it take to make the maple syrup that you gave us? I bet it takes a long time because it tastes so good. You think that the maple sap tasted like sweet water, but I think it would have tasted like sugur with water in it. First I think that the maple syrup tasted good already and it does taste good:I :).

Jenny in Mrs W’s 2/3 class.

  12. I very much enjoyed both videos. I hadn’t appreciated the process for making the syrup. Now I know why it’s so costly.
I thought your class based video was lively and entertaining.
Maple Leaf Rag, it had to be.

    • Dear Mr. E,
Many of the students in our class had no idea how maple syrup was made and really enjoyed the video. I think knowing all the work that goes into making each bottle made it even more special and certainly more delicious! We’re so glad you liked our video and we agree that the song seemed like a perfect fit πŸ™‚

I liked the idea of making pancakes! It seemed a lot of fun doing math measuring, reading the instructions and seeing all the cooking.
    Hope you enjoyed them,

  14. Dear Natalie,

We are lucky that we got to eat pancakes. Too bad he said you can’t make pancakes. The pancakes were just plain ones.
