Stone Soup

Last week, the K/1/2/3s read Stone Soup written by Jon J. Muth.  In this version on the European folk story, three monks make a very special soup. They teach a village, that has seen hard times, a lesson about happiness.  The monks convince the villagers to share ingredients for the soup that is started with just three stones. This act of sharing, brings kindness and happiness back to the village.

This week, the primary class made their own Stone Soup. The students washed, peeled, and chopped all the vegetables for the soup.

They all took turns cooking the soup too.  Of course we had to start with the stones. There was a lot of stirring to be done!

So many vegetables were brought in that there was enough soup to share with the whole school! Hopefully our soup spread a little happiness and kindness too.

Hand Washing

We had a special guest visit our class today.  Tyler, who is our community paramedic, came to teach us all about hand washing.

Tyler taught us all about germs and how we can stay healthy.  He demonstrated what happens when we sneeze using glitter and a spray bottle.  Germs sure can travel a long distance!  He also showed us the proper technique to use when we was our hands.

Next we put some special “germ” cream on our hands and then went to try out our hand washing skills.  After we washed, Tyler used a special flashlight to show us the spots we missed.

We would like to thank Tyler for visiting our class. Here are some of the things we learned:

  • Sneeze in your sleeve or else it will spread. (Rylann)
  • When you cough, cover your mouth. (Cayden)
  • If you touch something that is dirty, after doing it wash your hands. (Teddy)
  • Germs can spread. (Cozy)
  • Eat very good vegetables and fruit. (Kip)
  • If you are eating something and it is dirty it will spread germs. (Sinead)
  • You rub the soap all over your hands, then you wash it off, and then you get a paper towel. (Acacia)
  • There are lots of places that germs can get to, that you miss when you are washing your hands. (Joselyn)
  • Wash your hands with soap and water. (Lina)
  • Sing the Happy Birthday song twice or once if you sing it slow. (Harmony)
  • Don’t touch somebody else’s food. (James)
  • Germs can spread easily if you don’t wash your hands properly. (Ayla)
  • If you are sick and you want to get better you can eat chicken noodle soup. (Ryder)
  • Germs can spread when you sneeze or cough. (Clara)

Mrs. Watson asked us to go home this weekend and teach someone in our house the hand washing technique we learned today.

A Poppy is to Remember

This week’s art inspiration came from our discussions about Remembrance Day. The students began their landscapes by mixing shades of blue for the sky and making several colours of green using blue and yellow.

Next, the students added poppies.  We talked about perspective and how the poppies that are further away would be smaller.

We think the finished products are stunning and we hope you like them too!

Happy Halloween!

We had a horrifically wonderful Halloween! The students had fun coming to school in their costumes.

We would like to thank the Students’ Council for the awesome haunted house we were treated to after recess and the party they organized for the afternoon.  Families brought delicious treats, we had a costume parade, and there were so many fun stations.  Here are a few photos from the party:

Happy Halloween from the K/1/2/3s!

Halloween Spiders

After reading, The Very Busy Spider, by Eric Carle, we decided to make some busy spiders of our own. We started by making our backgrounds practicing our colour mixing.  Next we created our spiders with black construction paper.  We added details using oil pastels.  Finally, we made our webs and added our spiders.

A Scary (or not so scary) Art Project

The students spent our last art class learning all about line. We started by practicing all sorts of different kinds of lines.  Students then picked their favourites and drew them on their paper using different colours of oil pastels.

Next the students used a paint wash technique to fill in the spaces between their lines.  They noticed that the paint resisted the oil pastel. Finally, we created our monsters.  The students really let their imaginations run wild.

Meet our monsters…

Pumpkin Night

The K/1/2/3s finished the art project they started on Friday and we think they turned out terrific! The students cut out their paintings and mounted them on black paper.  Next, they added a moon, stars, and some highlights.  Finally, they used green chalk to add vines to their works of art.

Pumpkin Magic

We love art in K/1/2/3 and today we did a little pumpkin magic.  We painted these pumpkins, leaves, and stems using only the three primary colours: yellow, blue, and red.  Everyone did an amazing job of mixing colours!  Watch next week for the finished products after we cut them out and add them to a night sky.

2D Shapes

One of the activities we did in math today was learning about 2D shapes.  We watched this video and then tried drawing some shapes of our own.

Next we practiced making shapes with our bodies and talked about what polygons are (multi-sided closed shapes with straight sides). It took teamwork to make the octagon. The body challenges were tricky, but a lot of fun!
