Salmon Release 2013

On Tuesday, the whole school travelled to Rough Bay Creek to release our Coho Fry.  We hope you enjoy the video we made about our salmon.  It was our first time adding voice overs to a video.

Here is a link to the post we wrote when the salmon arrived in January click here.

  1. I learned so much in this clip! Thank you. You were very lucky students to get to raise ad release all of the fry (that is a new word that you taught me).
Keep up the amazing hands on learning.
    Mr D from NZ

    • Dear Mr D,
Thank you so much for leaving us a comment. We think we are pretty lucky too! Every year our school, and the other schools in our district, raise salmon to release into the wild. Sometimes we even get to see the salmon when they return to the creek to lay their eggs. Some of us have also been to the fish hatchery where they do what we did on a much larger scale.

Do you have salmon in New Zealand? Do you have fish hatcheries?

      Your friends,
      Mrs. W and the K/1/2/3s

  2. Fantastic! I really enjoyed your movie about the frye release. What an inspiration. What app did you create this with?

    • Dear Mrs. A.
Thank you so much for visiting our blog and leaving us a comment. We made the video using an iPhone to take the video and then put it together in iMovie on a Macbook. It was our first time trying to add voice overs. It was a lot of fun!

      Sincerely,
      Mrs. W and the K/1/2/3s

    • Dear Mrs. A
      Thanks for the comment.
The app we used for the video is called iMovie.
Have you ever let fish into a creek? and where do you live?

Thank you for the comment once again

  3. Dear Mrs. Watson and K/1/2/3,

Your video and voice over was fascinating to watch and hear. I did know a little about the salmon life cycle but checked online and found a Wiki graphic showing their life cycle. From your release, they have to make their way down to the sea. Wouldn’t it be wonderful to know how many of your fry return? Here is the link tot he graphic I found…

Australia, as far as I know, doesn’t really have salmon. We do have a fish we call the Australian salmon (or Kahawai to New Zealand) but it isn’t really a salmon at all. I know we can buy Canadian canned salmon in our supermarkets but that is the closest we come to salmon down here. Here is a link for the Australian salmon or Kahawai…

    Keep learning and sharing. 🙂

  4. Dear Mrs. Watson and class. I’ve never seen salmon fry or setting them free into Salmon streams. What a lovely gift you gave
to share your Field trip with others. My heart is really touched. To know that baby salmon have been named and cared for
and are growing up in the ocean of many trials, in order to return to their Home Streams….and that each of you have been part of that “helping hand”
to care for the Salmon….Is VERY COOL and VERY HEALING for our EARTH.

    Thank You.

  5. Dear Mrs. Watson,

I’ve never got salmon. Was cohofry a name or was it the type of salmon?

How many kids are in your school? There is 178 kids in our school!

    Brynn from Techie Kids 🙂

    • Dear Brynn

I don’t know that ether but there are 3 Classes in our School.

      Jacob from Mrs Watson’s Class

  6. Dear Mrs. Watson,

Your video was very nice. I thought it was very sweet when the kids said goodbye to their fish. You said that you travelled to Rough Bay Creek to release your Coho fry. Is Coho fry a younger salmon?

I’ve never released a fish before, but when I was younger I watched butterflies grow, and released them when they were matured.

Did you have fun on your trip? It looked like you were having the best time exploring nature. What is the weather like by you? By us it is just starting to warm up. Yesterday it reached 70 degrees. It hasn’t been that warm by us since October 6.

How many kids do you have in your school? we have 178 childeren from k-8.

I hope you have more fun field trips!:)
