Commander Hadfield

Each day our class checks in on the adventures of Commander Hadfield on Twitter. Commander Hadfield is a Canadian Astronaut. He was the first Canadian to walk in space and he is currently aboard the International Space Station. Commander Hadfield left Earth on December 19 and arrived at the ISS on December 21. In March he will take over as Commander until he returns to Earth in May. He will be the first Canadian to command the International space Station.

Each Day Commander Hadfield shares the pictures he takes from space. He also tweets out links to interviews he does and interesting information and facts. We think the pictures will take your breath away!

We have also learned that Commander Hadfield is quite a musician. This morning we listened to the song he recorded with Ed Robertson of the Barenaked Ladies and the Wexford Gleeks, “I.S.S. (Is Somebody Singing?)”. Click here or on the image below to listen to the song. We think it is fantastic!

We also watched a very interesting tour of the International Space Station that Commander Sunita Williams hosted before leaving the ISS in Novemeber. We especially liked seeing how the astronauts sleep and how they use the washroom. You can click on the image below to watch the video.

Would you like to visit the International Space Station?

Do you have any questions you would like to ask Commander Hadfield?

  1. Dear Mrs. Watson’s class,

You’ve captured our attention with this post. We hadn’t heard of Commander Hadfield before, but are happy to know of him now. Lauren saw the pictures from space and it made her feel like she wanted to go there. Very inspiring!

Kaity recently saw a video on YouTube of washing your hands in space. We couldn’t view your link on using the washroom because it was blocked, but we are wondering if it is the same clip she saw. We can check from home.

We were thinking of questions for Commander Hadfield. We wondered how long it took for him to learn what every “button” is for on the Space Station? Anikka wants to know if it is difficult to move around in space? Lauren heard the astronauts sleep standing up. Is that true? Is it difficult to fall asleep in space?

    Sincerely,
Kaity, Lauryn, Anikka, and Mrs. Moore

  3. We are also following Commander Hadfield. We were very excited to receive a tweet all the way from the ISS from him. Our favourite picture so far has been the picture of the Northern Lights from space. We couldn’t believe how green it was!. Do you had a favourite photo?

  4. Dear Mrs. Watson’s Class,
We loved looking at the pictures and listening to the song from Commander Hadfield. We all agree that we would love to go to the International Space Station if we could. We were wondering what it was like for Commander Hadfield to eat lunch?
    Your friends,
    Mrs. Lance’s Class
