Every year the students in our school make art to decorate the halls for Winterfest (our local craft fair). This year the theme was jellyfish. The students did a wonderful of decorating their jellyfish!

  1. Jellyfish in winter, how did you come up with such a different idea? All the children speak well in their videos and it’s nice seeing you using ‘green screen’ I always find it a little frustrating, but it is a great effect. I guess you might have jellyfish around your island? Although I’d think the water was too cold. I have been exploring bubble blowing. I started off with a bit of string about four weeks ago, now I have moved on. I think your children would like it as well and I would be happy to give them a few tips. There is some information on http://www.hawesps.posterous.com and some photos and videos of mine on http://www.wowbubbles.posterous.com Incidentally it’s a good multi-age group topic.
I imagine you will be doing a Christmas production soon, if you are when will you be starting and do you have snow?

    • Dear Mr. E,
Thank you for leaving us another comment! The theme for our annual craft fair, Winterfest, was jellyfish this year. We actually have lots of jellyfish in our waters. We have red ones and white ones. The red ones sting really badly. Some of us have fisherman in our families and when the jellyfish come aboard in the net you have to be really careful.

We think blowing bubbles is a lot of fun. We’ll have to take a look at your links and maybe give some of your ideas a try.

  2. Dear Class,
I thought all the jellyfish looked wonderful! On the video I enjoyed finding out about everybody’s jellyfish. I think it was cool that may’s likes to swim around the ocean 10 times. May, how long does it take her to swim around the ocean 10 times?

  3. Dear class
The jelly fish looked wonderful in the hall. Do you all like your jelly fish? I just loved the jelly fish so much. I love the video. Did you like the video with all of us in it? I love the video and the jelly fish. One of the jelly fish I could not take my eyes off because it was so beautiful. I don’t know why I did that. I liked the way May’s jelly fish liked to swim around the ocean 10 times. How long did it take to swim around the ocean ten times May?

  4. Hello Mrs. Watson’s K/1/2/3 Class,

I watched your video and think your jellyfish creations are beautiful. I like the way you included clear plastic/cellophane to show jellyfish can be transparent. They look beautiful even though some can have stinging tentacles dangerous for humans.

A common small one in my area is known as the blue-bottle jellyfish or Portuguese Man of War. They have an air sac so they float on the surface dragging their tentacles below in the hope of capturing fish and other small creatures. If their tentacles contact a human, their stings can hurt and leave red marks. When the wind blows them onshore, some beaches close to swimmers. Despite the risks, I find them fascinating, especially when you can examine the small jellyfish when one washes ashore. Here’s a link…

Our world is full of creatures from too tiny to see up to the largest animal we think ever to live (even bigger than dinosaurs), the blue whale. Jellyfish fascinate me because of their gentle journey and often bright colours. 🙂
