Plants, Plants, Everywhere!

In Science we are learning about living things. Today we thought about plants. We decided to go outside with our clipboards and pencils to find as many different kinds of plants as we could.

We talked about being scientists and that we would have to look closely at the plants we were going to sketch.  Here are some of our sketches:

We also compared the plants in our classroom to the trees we can see in our forest. We made a list of similarities and differences. Here are a few of the ideas we added to our lists:

Similarities

  • trees and house plants both have roots
  • trees and house plants get water from the soil by sucking it up with their roots
  • trees and house plants both have stems (Trees have really big stems!)
  • trees and plants are green (We talked about chlorophyll.)
  • trees and house plants both need sun and make their own food (We talked about photosynthesis.)

Differences

  • house plants have leaves (ours does) and the trees in the forest have leaves or needles
  • trees have woody stems that are much bigger than house plant stems
  • trees are taller than house plants
  • you can climb a tree, but you can’t climb our house plants
  • trees do better outside in the winter

  1. Dear Mrs Watson and class
I was interested to read about your science work, as the children in B4 will be studying plants for science this term (we are just finishing a two-week term break).
They will be doing their science work with the other B4 teacher, Mrs Wistrand. I wonder if the B4 children will come up with similar lists to yours?
It will be interesting to compare notes!

I noticed in your drawings that some of you drew plants with berries. Are those berries edible or inedible?

    warm wishes
    Mrs McKenzie

  2. Dear Mrs. McKenzie,
We hope you had a good 2 week break. What did you do on your break?

We think it is cool that we are both going to be studying the same topic. To answer your question about berries, we have inedible and edible berries around our school. Some of the edible ones are: salmon berries, black berries, salal berries, and huckleberries. Do you have any berries around your school?

We hope to talk to you again soon,
    Mrs. W and the K/1/2/3s
