A Very “Animated” Friday

Yesterday we only had 7 students in our class! Several of our classmates got to go to a special First Nations performance in Fort Rupert and so we decided to do something special too.

In the morning we did a round of Daily 5 and then we went to the computer lab to create ToonDoo comics and SketchFus for our blogs. ToonDoo and Sketchfu are both free and we love that your finished product can be embeded on your blog.

After recess we had a special visit from the intermediate class who came to share their social studies projects with us. Then we worked on DreamBox and Xtra Math until lunch. DreamBox is a lot of fun and Xtra Math is a great way to master basic math facts.

The best part of the day happened after lunch. We dedicated the whole afternoon to claymation. Some of the grade 3s had tried claymation in Tech Club last year and so they were able to help the others out. We found out that it takes a lot of time and patience to make even a very short claymation video. Here are three short videos that are ready to share:

Have you ever tried creating a stop motion animation?

  1. Dear Mrs. Watson and the 2/3s,

I love your claymations! I’m so impressed. The fact that you were able to do them in such a short period of time is great too! I’d love to know how you went about creating them. I’m assuming you used Jelly Cam but I’d love to know even more. I think there are so many great things that you’d be able to use this for in class. Thanks for sharing!

    Sincerely,
    Mr. Avery

    • Dear Mr. Avery,
Thank you for watching our claymations and for leaving us a comment! We used plasticine to create the characters and plain old construction paper to make the backgrounds. You’re right, we did use JellyCam to take the pictures with our webcam. Have you tried JellyCam before? It is really easy, you just hit the space bar to take a picture and then JellyCam puts it all together. We also used our lighting stands.

  2. Hi Mrs Watson and Class 2/3
I love these animations and what great little stories you have told. We started using jellycam this year too and think its great fun to do. It sounds as if you had a really good day and so busy!

    • Dear Ms. Breyley,
Thank you so much for leaving us a comment. How are things going at your little school? How many students do you have this year? We would love to see what you made with JellyCam. Are your videos posted on your blog?

  3. Hi Mrs Watson and Class 2/3
I LOVE your claymation – I watched each one a few times, I thought your growing flower was really clever, and sneaky snake slithered sensationally! Your pebbles in a cave were loopy! I loved them! We have done some stopmotion animation using Digiblues cameras, but I have never had a go with Jellycam, and it looks like a great thing to have a go at. Was it easy to do? What equipment do you need? What age would you recommend it for? It’s great to have an opportunity to work with a really small group on a project like this… sounds like a fab Friday afternoon!

    • Mrs M & A Room with a View,
Thank you so much for watching our videos! We have never heard of a Digiblues camera before. Mrs. Watson will have to look it up on Google. JellyCam is really easy. We just downloaded the free software and then you use whatever webcam you have to take the pictures. You simply press the space bar to take a picture and then JellyCam creates the video for you when you are done. It has a neat feature called onion skinning, so that you can see a ghost image of your previous picture. We think your students would enjoy giving it a try!

    • Thank you so much for leaving us such a wonderful comment. We think you would really like JellyCam, it makes stop motion much easier. All you need is a webcam and then you just hit the space bar to take each picture and JellyCam does the rest of the work. It even lets you upload your creation to You Tube. We think your students will love it!

      Sincerely,
      Mrs. W and the 2/3s

  4. WOW! I’m so surprised! These claymation’s are AWEWSOME! I did try once to make a stop motion but I just couldn’t do it! But you guys did a great job and I am very impressed. Sneaky Snake sounds VERY sneaky.

    • Dear Clemie,
Thank you for leaving us such a nice comment! Have you ever tried JellyCam before? It makes doing claymation and stop motion pretty easy. We hope you will give it another try 🙂
