Terrific Tuesday!

This afternoon we made our first Skype call of the new school year to our friends in Mrs. McKenzie’s class in New Zealand. We first met Mrs. McKenzie and her students last year and have been enjoying getting to know more about them through our blogs ever since. We got to Skype with Mrs. McKenzie and her class in June and we couldn’t wait to talk with them again!

The students in New Zealand celebrated Pet Day the day before our call. Our class thought Pet Day sounded like a lot of fun and wanted to share about their pets with Mrs. McKenzie’s class. We took turns showing pictures, drawings, figurines, and even had a few special pet visitors stop by the class. The students told a little about their pets and then answered questions.

Silkence’s dad brought in her dog Biscuit, Ana’s dad brought in her chicken Butter, and Jordan brought along her lizard. It was fun having special visitors for the call.

Oceana brought in pictures of three of her four dogs and Sophie brought in pictures of Lady. Lily brought in a figurine of a dog that her dad used to have and Niall had a great picture of his cat to show.

Fay doesn’t have any pets, but he showed the students in New Zealand a great picture he drew of the spiders that like to share his home.

The students in Mrs. McKenzie’s class told us all about their fantastic pets. We learned that:
Jack has a guinea pig named Manny. No one in our class has a guinea pig, but Sahara does have a hamster.

Several students in Mrs. McKenzie’s class have cats. Paige, Emily and Jonathon showed us the beautiful pictures they drew of their cats. We thought it was great that Jonathon had a cat to catch the mouse that was living in his house! Quite a few students in our class have cats too.

Liam told us about his calf named Sushi. We found out that Sushi got to come to school for Pet Day. We think Sushi is a great name!

JiaJia doesn’t have any pets, but she told us that if she could she would love to have a pet monkey. The students in our class thought that a monkey would be a very cool pet!

We also talked a little about Halloween. We found out that Halloween isn’t as big of a celebration in New Zealand as it is here in Canada. Quite a few of the students in Mrs. McKenzie’s class did go trick-or-treating though. We also found out that the students in New Zealand will celebrate Guy Fawkes on Friday night. The students are looking forward to the fireworks!

Thanks for another great call B4! We hope we can talk again before the end of your school year. 🙂

  1. Dear Mrs Watson and Grade 2/3
It was a lot of fun skyping with you all yesterday and getting to know you better. Pets are a really important part of the lives of most of us, so it was great sharing about the pets we have.
We have only 5 and a half weeks left of our term, but it would be wonderful to skype again before our big summer holidays start.

    • Dear Mrs. McKenzie and B4,
Wow! Only another 5 weeks of school. Things must be getting very busy for you. How long of a break will you have for your summer holidays? We get two months, but not until the end of June.

We hope we can squeeze in another call!

  2. Dear Mrs. W and the 2/3’s,

How wonderful it is to have the opportunity to Skype with Mrs. McKenzie and B4! I am hoping some day this year our class will have the same opportunities with New Zealand. The kids in my class are still talking about Skyping with your class last year and those Silly Bandz! We hope will be able to Skype with your class again soon even though our class has fourth graders this year. We would love to exchange the different things we’ve been learning with you.
Mrs. Yammine and the Super STARS!

    • Dear Mrs. Yammine and the Super Stars,
Skype really is an amazing tool! Many of the students in our class have never been out of our province or even to the mainland, but through Skype we can travel the world! We still talk about Skyping with your class too. The kids loved their Silly Bandz. Many of them wear them, but it hasn’t caught on where we live yet like it has for you.

We would love to Skype with you again too!
