  1. Hi Mrs W and 1,2,3,
Australia does have some very strange and different animals to any other place in the world.
After Captain Cook from England, ‘discovered’ Australia, many animals and plants from Australia were sent back to England to be studied. When the scientists in England saw a platypus, they thought they had been sent a joke. The scientists thought the people in Australia had got several different animals and sewn them together.
You asked about the tiger snake. The tiger, as it is known, gets its’ name from its’ stripey appearance. We don’t have tigers in Australia.
Tiger snakes are very dangerous. They are venomous with their venom being strong enough to kill a human. The tiger grow up to 2 metres in length. Unlike many snakes, the tiger gives birth to live babies. They can have 30 babies at once.
Tiger snakes eat lizards, mice, small rats, frogs and birds. The tiger will come into chook houses looking for mice and rats. Tiger snakes can be found in backyards in towns. We have tiger snakes living around our area. Many of our families will see at least one tiger snake at home each summer. We usually see a snake at school each year too.
All Australian snakes are protected. We are not suppose to kill them.
You may like to look at http://www.tigersnakes.com.au/ to find out some more information about the tiger snake.
