Missoula Children’s Theatre Week

The students had a great time with Missoula Children’s Theatre (MCT) last week. This year’s directors, Britini and Charlie, were fantastic with the students and made this an experience to remember!

The week started Monday morning with auditions in the gym. The students did some line reading, singing, and dancing and within about 90 minutes all the parts for the play had been cast.  There was a lot of excitement as the different roles were announced.

Throughout the rest of the week there were morning and afternoon rehearsals, as well as two workshops that the primary class got to participate in.  On Tuesday, they took part in an acting workshop where they learned about the basic tools of an actor’s trade – observation, memorization, concentration, and imagination. The students participated in a variety of fun exercises, learning to apply the actor’s tools to both performing and everyday life.

On Thursday, the whole school went to the stage make-up workshop.  This is a favourite each year. Corrective, character and special effects makeup for the theatre are demonstrated on student volunteers.

Friday was a big day for the students. They got to see their costumes and had a great dress rehearsal before the big show. They also got to stay at school instead of going home at the end of the day and had a fantastic pizza dinner provided by our school PAC.

The Friday night show and the Saturday matinee were both very well attended. We would like to thank our amazing parents and community for all their support, and for making MCT possible each year!

Almost Time for the Tortoise and the Hare!

Missoula Children’s Theatre (MCT) will be arriving at the school Monday morning.  The students will audition for parts and then will spend the week rehearsing so that they will be ready to share the musical with the community Friday evening and Saturday afternoon.  This will be our eighth year working with MCT.

In honour of this year’s production, the Tortoise vs. the Hare, we did a little tortoise inspired art on Friday. We used many different types of lines to create these Zentangle Tortoises.

Snow Please!

The last art class before Christmas break, the students created these beautiful snowy scenes (click on each image to see the full picture).  We are all hoping for snow and look at the weather forecast eagerly each morning.

Yesterday morning we got our wish for snow and took the crazy carpets outside at recess to take advantage of it.  There was only a small dusting, but we made the most of it!

Merry Ho! Ho! Ho!

These Santas are ready for Christmas Eve!

Let it Snow!

The K/1/2/3’s latest creations are beautiful winter landscapes. This art lesson focused on creating tints and shades. The students started by mixing blue and white to make tints of blue for the background. Next they used white and black to make various tints and shades of green for their trees. After their papers were dry, they cut out their trees and painted on the snowy ground. The final step was to create their forests and add detail with chalk. You can click on the images below to see them full-sized.

Reindeer

The first signs of Christmas are decking our halls. The students enjoyed this directing drawing lesson on Friday. We think the Reindeer are picture perfect (you can click on each image to see it full sized)!

Dusda̱k̕wa Pancakes and Jam

This afternoon we got into groups of 4 and made dusda̱k̕wa pancakes to go with the dusda̱k̕wa jam we made yesterday.  They turned out fantastic and everyone thought they were super yummy!

We used the Fluffy Pancakes recipe from allrecipes.com and added in 4 spoonfuls of dusda̱k̕wa. Each recipe made 8 pancakes, which the students were quick to calculate, made two pancakes for each group member.

Ingredients

  • 3/4 cup milk
  • 2 tablespoons white vinegar
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 tablespoons white sugar
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 egg
  • 2 tablespoons butter, melted
  • cooking spray

Directions

  1. Combine milk with vinegar in a medium bowl and set aside for 5 minutes to “sour”.
  2. Combine flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt in a large mixing bowl. Whisk egg and butter into “soured” milk. Pour the flour mixture into the wet ingredients and whisk until lumps are gone.
  3. Heat a large skillet over medium heat, and coat with cooking spray. Pour 1/4 cupfuls of batter onto the skillet, and cook until bubbles appear on the surface. Flip with a spatula, and cook until browned on the other side.

Dusda̱k̕wa Jam

The students finished their Berries Inquiry today with the making of dusda̱k̕wa freezer jam. The students worked in teams to gather materials and ingredients. First they had to mash the blackberries. They practiced their counting in kwak’wala as they did this. Each person got 10 mashes and then passed the bowl. Next they measured and added the remaining ingredients and got more counting practice as they stirred and stirred to dissolve the sugar. It was a lot of stirring!

Here is the video we use to practice our pronunciation. We are trying our best. Some of the numbers are tricky to say.

Tomorrow we are going to try our jam.

Voices for the Salish Sea

Voices for the Salish Sea

Yesterday morning the students were treated to the first ABC performance of the year. The computer lab was filled with song as, The Wilds and Tiller’s Folly joined forces in a celebration of songs and stories about the Salish Sea, its beauty, history, ecology and culture. Their goal is to entertain, engage, educate and promote a sense of pride, awareness, advocacy and stewardship for the unique ecosystem that is our Salish Sea. The students enjoyed the music and even had parts to sing.  What a great way to start the day!
