Berry Inquiry

Our class is excited to be doing a berry inquiry project for September and October. This week we picked dusda̱k̕wa (blackberries) across from the school to use for all the activities we will be doing. We hope that the students can bring some berries in from home that they pick as well so that we will have lots!

One of our first activities was using the berries we picked for estimation in math.  We have been practicing making good estimates by making an estimate that we think is a little too low, one that is a little too high, and then one that we think is just right.  We count out, or weigh the objects, a bit at a time and then modify our estimates as we go by crossing out our original estimate and then writing our new estimate below it.  On the first day we started with a small quantity of berries.

On the second day we estimated a large quantity and then today we estimated a whole bucket of berries.

How many berries do you think are in the medium and large containers? Leave your guess in the comments.

  1. Would you believe that there were 225 berries in the medium container and 890 berries in the milk jug? I know many of us were very surprised.
