Bamboo Music by Khac Chi

Two wonderful musicians from Vietnam visited our school today. They brought with them all sorts of instruments primarily made from bamboo. Some of our favourite instruments were the dan bau (a one-stringed zither), the dan trung (a hanging bamboo xylophone), a two-string violin, and a flute that was so long it could be played by two or three people at the same time. We also loved the instruments they invented themselves!

Which instrument was your favourite?

Have you ever made a musical instrument?

  1. Dear Class,
I loved when the musicians from Vietnam came. My favorite instrument was the one with only one string. I have never made my own instrument except for banging sticks together.

  2. Hello Mrs. Watson’s K/1/2/3 Class,

This was absolutely fascinating to watch and hear. I loved the sounds coming from the assorted instruments. Can you imagine how many amazing instruments and sounds there must be in the world if all of these came just from Vietnam?

In a recent 15 school Performing Arts Festival I filmed, the new sound was students playing tuned plastic tubes by hitting them on the floor or tapping them with drumsticks. I wonder if they had the idea from instruments such as those you have seen?

Thank you for sharing your experience. 🙂

  3. Dear Mrs. Watson’s Class,
We really enjoyed watching the video of the music from Vietnam. We liked all of the insturments. We have not yet made any instruments in class, but we will when we study sound in science. Maybe we can share our instruments once they are made.

    • Dear Mrs. Lance’s Class,
Thanks for leaving us another comment. We really liked the music too. 12 of us have made musical instruments before. We have made: shakers, sticks to bang together, elastic band guitars, elastic band harps, rattles, tin can shakers, and even using pots and pans from home.

We would love to see your instruments when you make them.

  4. Dear Mrs. Watson’s class,

I love music and I love bamboo! This is amazing. Thank you for sharing. I wish I could have been there to hear it in person.
