Sink or Float?

This afternoon in science we looked at another property of matter. We were given a group of objects and had to predict whether they would sink or float.

Some of us made our predictions based on mass, whether objects had holes or not, whether there was air trapped in the object, or by thinking about experiences we have had with similar things.

Next we tested our predictions and tried to explain our results. Many of the objects behaved just like we thought they would, but some of the results were surprising!

Two of the objects acted strangely. The plastic bead and the flat plastic triangle could either sink or float depending on how they were placed in the water. If the plasic triangle was placed flat on the top of the water it floated, but if we put it in on its edge it sank. The plastic bead sank, but if water formed over the holes in the bead, kind of like a bubble, it floated. We tried very hard to find reasons for why this was happening and decided that we need to do some more experimenting.

  1. Another fun experiment! I remember once when Robert was given a special rock. We asked him if the rock would float or would it sink. He was sure it would sink but when we put it in water it floated! It was a lava rock that was full of air bubbles. It’s fun when objects behave differently than what you expect.
