New Zealand Postcards

Several weeks ago we were asked to participate in a postcard project with a school from St. Clair, New Zealand. Three classes sent us postcards that they made about their community and asked us to give them feedback about the messages that the cards conveyed.

The first set we looked at belonged to Ms. Bee and the Super 7 Scoopers. You can see our comments on their blog here . They did a wonderful job depicting what life was like in past and present day St. Clair.

The second set of cards we looked at were from Mr. Hunter and his class Room 13. They used beautiful descriptive language on their postcards and inspired us to write St. Clair poems. We hope you like them!

In the next few days we will respond to the final set of postcards. You can sure learn a lot from a postcard!

  2. Oh wow! What awesome poems you have written! I am excited as I listen to your recitals because I can hear that Room 13’s poems certainly gave you some insight in the place that we live in. St Clair is a special suburb of a city called Dunedin but you have captured what makes St Clair different to all the other suburbs in our city! The Scoopers are going to have a go at writing poems about the place that you live by exploring your blog and photos. Perhaps you could give us some clues about what make Victoria a special place and different to other places?! 🙂 Ms B, St Clair, Dunedin, New Zealand

  3. Dear Ms. B,

We would love to give you some clues about our town, Sointula. We can’t wait to hear poems about where we live!

    Here are our clues:
    1. We live on a small island and we are surrounded by the Pacific Ocean.
    2. We have lots of evergreen trees on our island (Cedars, Douglas Firs, Spruce)
    3. We don’t have any lines on our roads.
    4. We don’t have any traffic lights, but we do have stop signs.
    5. We don’t live in a city.
    6. We have a lot of deer on our island.
    7. We are surrounded by mountains too.
    8. A lot of living creatures call our island home, but no scary ones really.
    9. Our Oceans are full of fish and other animals like whales, dolphins, crabs, jellyfish, sea stars, octopus, etc.
    10. We have a preschool and one elementary school. Highschool students have to take the ferry to the next town.
    11. Sointula means place of harmony.
    12. Sointula was settled by a group Finnish people. Some of our families speak Finnish.
    13. We have rocky beaches.
    14. We have no hospital or police station.
    15. We don’t have very many shops or restaurants.
    16. It is beautiful here!!!

    Hope that helps 🙂

  4. Fantastic! You have given us some awesome clues! Thanks so much! Our next step is to brainstorm the words that we could use in our poetry- then we will try to put it together into a poem. We will keep you posted on our progress… 🙂

  5. I loved listening to the poems, what a lovely idea to use the postcards that way.
We have had a parcel of postcards too and have had a quick look at them; we are looking forward to learning more from them and will all look to see what you all thought they told you about St Clairs. I think our area is more like yours than theirs but its fascintating to be able to compare.

    • Dear Mrs. Breyley,

We didn’t know that you received postcards too. The students sure did a great job on them. We learned a lot about where they lived. It really is a lot of fun comparing different communities all over the world!
