Every second year the school makes a community phone directory as a fundraiser for our library.  The students do the cover art making the directories real keepsakes.  Here is a sneak peek at the beautiful designs that will be available next weekend at Winterfest and afterwards at the gas station.  The K/1/2/3s are amazing printmakers!

Painted Paper Pumpkins

On Friday we used our painted paper to create the most fabulous pumpkins and jack-o-lanterns. Here are some photos of our jack-o-lanterns.  They have such personality!

Our Next Art Project…

On Friday we began work on our next art project.  We looked at several books by author and illustrator Eric Carle as inspiration.  For this project the students first needed to create painted paper.  We practiced mixing paint and adding texture to our paintings using different tools and techniques.  Stay tuned to see what this painted paper turns into this week!

Beach Art

It was a beautiful afternoon and so we decided to head down to the beach for art.  The students used found objects to make their art pieces.  Some chose to make their own masterpieces and others chose to work together.  The students found treasures to share with each other and were quick to help their friends when they needed it.

Here are our finished works of art.  We hope you like them!

Kandinsky Inspired Trees

In art we looked at the works of Russian artist, Wassily Kandinsky.  We noticed how his style changed throughout his life and spent time discussing how he used colour and shape in his paintings.  Then we set off to make some trees inspired by some of these later works.

Spring is in the Air!

We were a small group this afternoon, but we had a very busy and fun time.  We started a new read aloud (James and the Giant Peach) by one of our favourite authors, started a new science unit on Solids, Liquids, and Gases and we also finished our daffodil paintings.

Here’s a look at our beautiful paintings:

We hope to see everyone at the Loonie Auction tomorrow evening in the school gym.  It should be a great time!

A Very Messy Afternoon!

What do you get when you take 3 old desks, a lot of tempera paint, and a group or 5-8 year olds?

This is step one of an art project we will continue next week. The students had a wonderful time exploring colour, line, and pattern as they finger painted their desks and made beautiful prints. Stay tuned to see what we do next!

Mondrian Webs

Today we finished a two week art project inspired by the work of Piet Mondrian. The students began by learning a little bit about the Dutch painter and studied many of his works. We discussed his use of line and colour in his paintings as we compared many of his pieces.

Then we applied what we had learned about Mondrian to our own work as we created our spider webs. We hope you like them!

Pumpkin Night

Today in art we created beautiful pumpkins and learned about mixing colours at the same time. To paint our pumpkins we had to mix read and yellow to make orange. To paint the leaves we had to mix yellow and blue; and to make the stems we had to mix red, yellow and blue.

After painting our pumpkins in the morning, they were dry enough after lunch to cut out and finish the project. We used the illustrations in a book called, Pumpkin Day, Pumpkin Night as inspiration for our glowing moons as twinkling stars.

We hope you like our pumpkins!
