The second topic in the, Our World, Our Numbers project is landmarks. This topic is being led by Mrs. Yollis’ class in California.
We talked about Canadian landmarks earlier this week, but the students had a hard time thinking of any. Someone thought, the Co-op might be a Canadian landmark (it may very well be a landmark in our little town, but it doesn’t quite make the list). We also had suggestions of the Taj Mahal, the Sphinx, and Burj Khalifa (the world’s tallest tower). It seems we had a little work to do before we would be able to share with our friends around the world.
We started by looking at photos of famous Canadian landmarks and then read facts about each one. On Thursday, we choose the landmark that we would like to share and wrote our scripts with our partners. Next we practised, practised, and practised some more until we felt ready. After lunch we each took a turn in front of the green screen and put our video together just before we went home for the day.

Wow, I can’t believe you made this in one day! Owen, Kai, and I watched this movie together. Owen really liked seeing his sister in the movie and Kai was just excited to see everyone! He loves your class! Our family was in Toronto in October and saw the CN tower from many places we visited as it is so high! Last year, we also drove through the Rockies. We visited two National parks and saw lots if wildlife. I wonder if your class could guess what some of the animals were?

Thank you so much for your comment. We’re really glad that you liked our movie! We think you are lucky that you got to see the CN Tower and drive through the Rockies. Did you go up the CN Tower and onto the observation deck (Lily)? Could you see anyone on the observation deck while you were on the ground (Jacob)? Did you see any lizards in the Rockies(Kezra)? Was it really high up in the Rockies (Koa)? Did you see any deer in the Rockies (Taegan)? Did you see any bears in the Rockies (Jorja)?
Here are our guesses about the wildlife you saw: mountain goats, donkeys, moose, deer, black bears, crows, hummingbirds, caribou, eagles, pigeons, robins, and lizards. We hope you will tell us about the animals you did see, or we could ask Bronwen (We didn’t let her help us with our guesses).

Thank-you for your great questions! I will try to answer them all. Lily, we did not go up the CN Tower on this trip. We actually didn’t even go to the bottom of the tower, and from where we saw it Jacob, I could not see any people on the observation deck. Kezra, we did not see any lizards in the Rockies. It was pretty chilly even though it was the end of May. Koa, it was really high up. We drove through some high mountain passes and we could see glaciers. Taegan, we did see some deer in the Rockies. At one National Park, there are deer called mule deer that are much larger than the ones we have in Sointula. And yes Jorja we saw two kinds of bears, black bears and grizzlies!
You have some good guesses about the wildlife that we saw. I have already answered some of this question above but here are the rest of the animals: mountain goats, crows, bighorn sheep, muskrat, and ground squirrel. There is so much wildlife in the National Parks. We only saw some of it. I really wanted to see bison; we even drove through a bison paddock but they were hiding somewhere. Part of me was relieved too because there were a lot of signs warning you about unpredictable bison. I was worried our van would get trampled.

I am not able to view the video at school, but I am interested in going online at home th see the video. I am sure that it is really good.
I went to New York City and stayed in a hotel so close to the water that I could see the Statue of Liberty form the window. In that same trip, I went on a ferry to Ellis Island and actually went to the top of the statue! It was a long way up to the top. By the time we got to the top, we were so exhausted that on the way down, we took the elevator. It was really fun to be inside a national landmark!
I read the other comments about the Rocky Mountains and I wanted to tell you a little story. I went to Pennsylvania with my grandparents and there was a rockslide right in front of us when we were in the mountains! We were really lucky that the car didn’t get hit. We were delayed by two hours and didn’t arrive until like midnight! Our friends in Pennsylvania were so worried. The next day we went to Hershey Park and also went on a tour of the factory. It was really fun.

Thank you so much for leaving us comments. We thought that you listed a lot of landmarks in the United States that we would love to visit. Not many students in our class have been to the United States before. Those that have have been to places like Disney World, Disneyland, Sea Wolrd, and museums. Some students hove also driven down the west coast through Washington and California. It’s too bad that we can’t go on field trips to visit all the different landmarks you listed!

I loved your post about the different landmarks in Canada. I am from Michigan and we have many interesting landforms as well, such as the Grand Canyon in Arizona and Old Faithful in Wyoming at the Yellowstone National Park. I would love to visit them both! Actually, next summer I will be going to go camping in the Grand Canyon and I can not wait!

You are talking about land marks. In the United States we have the statue of liberty, the Empire State building, and the Grand Canyon. I have never been to any of them but My dad told me he has been to New York City and he has seen the Statue of liberty, and the Empire State building.

I have always wanted to see the Grand Canyon too. I would also like to see the landmarks in the video that I haven’t had a chance to yet. I’ve often thought that it would be fun to take a trip driving across Canada so that I can see all the wonderful landmarks in our country.
